Mowing Heights: The Key to a
Healthy, Beautiful Lawn

Professional lawn mowing

One of the most important aspects of lawn care is mowing at the correct height. Mowing too short or too tall can stress your grass, making it more susceptible to disease, pests, and drought. Understanding the ideal mowing height for your specific grass type is essential for maintaining a healthy, beautiful lawn that makes a great impression for your commercial property.

Why Mowing Height Matters

Grass height directly affects the depth of the root system. Taller grass blades shade the soil, retain moisture, and develop deeper roots - making the lawn more resilient to heat and drought. Cutting grass too short (scalping) removes the leaf tissue needed for photosynthesis, weakening the plant and allowing weeds to invade.

Recommended Mowing Heights by Grass Type

Kentucky Bluegrass

2.5 - 3.5 inches

A cool-season grass popular in the Northeast. Mow at the higher end during summer heat to reduce stress.

Tall Fescue

3 - 4 inches

A durable, drought-tolerant cool-season grass. Higher mowing heights improve drought resistance.

Fine Fescue

2.5 - 3.5 inches

Shade-tolerant and low-maintenance. Avoid mowing too short, which can lead to thinning.

Perennial Ryegrass

2 - 3 inches

A fine-bladed cool-season grass. Regular mowing at proper heights maintains density and appearance.

Bermudagrass

1 - 2 inches

A warm-season grass that prefers lower mowing heights. Scalping should be avoided.

Zoysiagrass

1 - 2.5 inches

A dense, slow-growing warm-season grass. Mow frequently to avoid thatch buildup.

The One-Third Rule

Regardless of grass type, always follow the one-third rule: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Removing too much at once causes stress and can lead to yellowing and thinning. If your lawn has grown too tall, mow it down gradually over several sessions.

Seasonal Adjustments

Mowing heights should be adjusted seasonally. During the heat of summer, raise your mowing height by half an inch to help the grass withstand heat stress. In fall, gradually lower the height to prevent matting under snow. In spring, start at a slightly lower height to remove dead winter growth.
